A psychoeducational evaluation consists of approximately 5 ½-6 hours of office appointment time (includes conference with parents to discuss results). Testing is available for kindergarten through college age. An evaluation generally consists of tests that are administered on a one-to-one basis. Parents of minor children are able to view the testing on closed-circuit TV, but without sound due to test material security. A full written report, with results and recommendations, is also prepared. It is generally recommended that a psychoeducational evaluation be scheduled as two "half-day" sessions.
What you don't see behind the scenes include scoring parent and teachers' checklists (1 hour), writing a lengthy report (3 or more hours), final scoring and rechecking scoring of tests (1 hour). Typically, the examiner dedicates approximately ten hours to all that is needed for a psychoeducational evaluation.
A psychoeducational evaluation is to assess for learning and/or attention difficulties. For many youngsters, it is best to divide the testing into two separate appointments. It generally includes:
IQ Test
Academic Testing
Process tests (auditory & visual realm)
Measure of visual-motor integration
Computerized testing of attention span
Behavioral Screening
Parent/teacher checklists
Reviewing Results and recommendations with parent(s)
The
private Licensed School Psychologist meets with the parent(s) for
approximately 45-60 minutes and the end of the testing session to review the results and to provide
appropriate recommendations. A 15-20 page written report is prepared and
sent to the parent about 4-10 days after the evaluation.
Psychoeducational testing evaluates
the strengths and weaknesses of a student's abilities, learning style
and educational achievement. Through Psychoeducational testing, Reading,
Writing and Mathematics Disorders are determined. Standardized
educational testing will also reveal the extent to which a student's
problems fall in the mild, moderate or severe range when compared to
same aged peers and whether other factors are contributing to or
exacerbating functioning.
It
is well established that children and adolescents with learning
disorders have a much higher rate of ADHD, as well as behavioral
problems. Thus, it is essential to further identify or rule-out other potential issues.
